“Is This America?” is a portfolio of 30 variational prints on paper, each utilizing a combination of inkjet printing with traditional screen-printing. A different scene from the Jan. 6th 2021 insurrection of the U.S. Capitol is presented as a paid online advertisement that one would encounter while browsing the web. The language for the caption below the image comes from an error message I encountered online around the same time as the insurrection. I pose the same question to the viewer to provoke individual action and personal accountability towards ensuring the preservation of U.S. democracy.
The print title, "Is This America?", is a quote by former U.S. Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn on Jan. 6 2021 who passionately posed this question in the Capitol's Rotunda shortly after the riot had been contained.
