EXEGESIS
Solo Exhibition at the Biggin Gallery
Auburn University, Alabama
October 5 – Nov 3, 2017
Michael Menchaca’s work combines a video game aesthetic with imagery drawn from historical and cultural touchstones of Mesoamerica, to create a new image-based vocabulary. Menchaca’s visual narratives are executed in prints and video installations, and bridge ancient symbols with contemporary materials while infusing them with current socio-political situations appropriated from newspaper headlines. A native to San Antonio, TX, Menchaca earned his BFA in Printmaking from Texas State University, and his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design; he is also an alumnus of the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the traveling exhibition State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now, as well as solo exhibitions at the Hudson D. Walker Gallery (Provincetown, MA), and the Art League Houston (Houston, TX). His work is in the collections of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (Bentonville, AR), the National Museum of Mexican Art (Chicago, IL), and Artspace (NYC), among others, and his residencies include the Wassaic Project (Wassaic, NY) and the Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT).
